Dries Van Noten

Dries Van Noten: The Master of Modern Opulence

Origins

Dries Van Noten launched his namesake label in 1986, debuting his first menswear collection in London as part of the influential Antwerp Six. Born in Antwerp in 1958, Van Noten hails from a lineage of tailors and garment merchants. He studied fashion at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp, graduating in 1980. The brand quickly gained acclaim for its innovative use of prints, textures, and layering, establishing a unique voice in the fashion world.

Ownership

In 2018, Spanish fashion and fragrance conglomerate Puig acquired a majority stake in the Dries Van Noten brand. Van Noten retained a significant minority share and continued as chief creative officer and chairman of the board. In June 2024, after 38 years at the helm, Van Noten stepped down as creative director, marking the end of an era for the brand.

Aesthetic

Dries Van Noten’s aesthetic is characterized by a harmonious blend of eclectic prints, rich colors, and intricate embellishments. The brand is renowned for its ability to juxtapose opulence with pragmatism, creating garments that are both visually striking and wearable. Van Noten often draws inspiration from art, music, and global cultures, resulting in collections that are intellectually stimulating and emotionally resonant.
